Tools We Use in Our Welding Workshop (Honest Breakdown)

A lot of welding guides over-complicate things.

This is a real breakdown of the tools we actually use daily in our West Midlands workshop no fluff, no unnecessary gear.

1. Welding Machine

Your most important tool.

We recommend:

  • MIG welders for beginners
  • Easy control
  • Cleaner welds

2. Angle Grinder

Used for:

  • Cutting metal
  • Smoothing welds
  • Cleaning surfaces
  • One of the most used tools in any workshop.

3. Clamps

Essential for:

  • Holding materials in place
  • Keeping angles accurate

4. Measuring Tools

Accuracy matters.

We use:

  • Tape measures
  • Steel squares

5. Welding Helmet

Never compromise on safety - Personal protective equipment (PPE)

Auto-darkening helmets are ideal:

  • Faster workflow
  • Better visibility

6. Protective Gear

Includes:

  • Gloves
  • Jackets
  • Steel-toe boots

7. Workbench / Welding Table

A solid surface improves:

  • Stability
  • Precision

What You DON’T Need (Beginner Mistake)

Avoid:

  • Overbuying expensive gear
  • Complex machines too early

Start simple and upgrade later.

Our Setup in the West Midlands

Our workshop is built around:

  • Efficiency
  • Practical tools
  • Real-world builds

Final Thoughts

Good tools help—but skill matters more.

If you’re not ready to invest in equipment, we also build custom pieces to order.

"Clear, practical, and based on experience. These blogs covers how to get started with welding, what equipment is actually worth buying, and how to improve your skills without wasting time or money. You’ll also find honest reviews and lessons learned the hard way—so you don’t have to."
