How We Built a Steel Garden Gate (Step-by-Step)

Introduction

A steel garden gate is one of the most popular custom welding projects we build in West Midlands.

Here’s exactly how we do it—from start to finish.

Step 1: Measure the Opening

Accurate measurements are critical.

We:

  • Measure width and height
  • Allow space for hinges

Step 2: Cut the Steel Frame

We cut:

  • Outer frame pieces
  • Internal supports

Step 3: Tack Weld the Frame

Before full welding:

  • Align everything
  • Tack corners first
  • This prevents warping.

Step 4: Full Weld

Once aligned:

  • Complete all joints
  • Keep welds consistent

Step 5: Grind & Smooth

We:

  • Smooth welds
  • Clean edges

Step 6: Paint & Protect

Important in the UK climate:

  • Apply primer
  • Add weather-resistant paint

Step 7: Install Hinges

Final step:

  • Attach hinges
  • Test movement
  • Adjust alignment

Built in West Midlands

All our gates are built locally with durability in mind.
